BSS Photocompetition 2010-11

In 2010-11, twenty nine entries were received from twelve members, giving the second highest number of entries in the history of the competition!

Each entry was marked with a differing number of points being awarded, as follows:

How the Competition is judged.

Choice of Dial - 12 Points

Artistic Merit - 12 Points

Focus - 8 Points

Exposure - 8 Points

Illumination - 8 Points

Title - 8 Points

Print Quality - 12 Points

Presentation - 12 Points

Overall Impression - 20 Points

Points were allocated by each judge against the nine factors listed on the left.   To ensure that the differing way that judges mark can have no resulting effect upon the order of the winning entry, all the results are normalised to allocate a notional thousand marking points to each judge, these then being distributed amongst all entries in proportion to each judge's original markings.

The Judges Vote

This year Mike Cowham, took the first,  second and third places with his entries:

First: Wake up Luigi, it's nearly time for lunch

Second: Winter sunshine, Fascinating brickwork

Third: What do you make of this then Pepe?

Mike's winning entry, was only marginally higher placed than his other two entries. To further add to this highly unusual situation, the next three places were also won by one person, Dariusz Oczki, a member from Poland.

The Conference Vote

Delegates at the Wyboston Lakes Conference were given the opportunity to rate the photographs, before the officially judged results were announced, and to choose their favourites.

The results of this Conference Vote were:

First: 'Sail into the sun' (Dennis Cowan)

Second: 'It's not fair, he always gets more sun' (Dariusz Oczki)

Third: 'Christmas Time' (Jackie Jones)

Fourth: ‘Experimentum Cricis’ (John Davis)

Fifth (equal): ‘The Lawn Ranger’ (Dennis Cowan) and ‘Blue Skies’ (Tony Wood)
